Projects

Contracted by the Roads Authority of Namibia at the start 2008, it was a real opportunity from Namibia Construction to show there expertise in the Okahandja – Karbib Road upgrade project. One of the biggest challenges faced during construction was accommodating the existing traffic and to consider safe driving conditions. Part of the existing road was used as deviation, whilst the widening is done on the other side. Once this was completed, the traffic then was diverted on the newly constructed road, whilst the remaining part of the old road was dug up, reworked and new layers added.

These proposed measures was to provide cost saving but yet this innovative design allowed for wider lanes without the requirement for a complete bypass furthermore considering it would be difficult to accommodate the traffic through riverbeds in the rainy season.

The rehabilitation of the main road made provision to accommodate over 1 500 vehicles per day. Stringent safety measures were put in place to protect workers whilst traffic was passing within close proximity. In total close to 700 000m3 of imported fill was done ranging from G7 to G2 material and about 3 000 000m3/km of overhaul material for various sub-base and base courses was used Various small, medium and micro contractors was leveraged on in the construction of stomwater culverts and surfacing, this was in an effort to support and promote local contractors during the construction of the road.

The 77 km stretch road from Okahandja to Karibib (Wilhelmstadal) was successfully completed towards the end of 2010, a total contract period of 34 months

An average of 20 streets were rehabilitated with lengths of road varying from 200m to 50km

Civil works and infrastructure services to the new extension in Rocky Crest.

Traffic had to be accommodated throughout the construction period for access into the existing suburb and especially the newly constructed traffic circle had to be planned and executed in phases.

Around 1 500m³ of hard rock material had to be excavated, the cut to fill exercise was close to 54 200m3 and a total of 44 600m3 was imported fill. Namibia Construction made use of various SME type contractors and partners.

The CoW in partnership with Otweya Land developers will make room for close to 250-serviced erven, with a fully functioning services connected to the City of Windhoek service reticulation system.

Construction of concrete aprons, various civil works and earthworks. CEM 1 42.5R Ohorongo cement was used for a 60MPa concrete mix with approximate quantities of close to 6 500m3 for the Apron / Handstand

The upgrading of the existing runways was done with more than 29 800 ton of asphalt.

Over 75 000m³ embankments and 120 ha of new salt fields constructed within a required 20mm tolerance.

Namibia’s first two Piston Bullies were used – which is typically used in snow areas.
